Astro Bot swarms the player with bright ideas, sparking almost endless joy. Besides many of Astro Bot’s creative and exciting boss battles, nostalgia fuels much of Astro Bot’s most thrilling moments, especially with the few stages specifically themed after PlayStation’s most beloved properties.
Astro Bot uses dynamic resolution scaling and I noticed a 1440p to 2160p rendering window (though of course, this could change according to content). Thanks to its simple, clean design and effective anti-aliasing, the game’s image quality is really never an issue and it holds up well without any ghosting reconstruction or other image stability issues. It presents very cleanly, which is so important for legibility in a platform game – and Team Asobi got it right. Many of us with backlogs probably don’t feel it that’s the thing. We are happy playing PS4, other PS5 or any older gen games, coming up to a compelling PS5/Series/Switch/PC/mobile game and then going back to the other or moving on to the next. Although this game could be construed as a sequel to that and certainly shares many similar sequences and characters. It also features dozens of characters from first and third party PlayStation games from throughout the decades – although the way they’re handled is one of the game’s few failings. Even Astro Bot dips into that in its final world as it begins repeating power-ups and enemy types. It doesn’t have trouble keeping its double dips to a minimum, though.
The lack of story in Astro Bot reflects the character’s origin in PlayStation 4 tech demos The Playroom and The Playroom VR. As such, he’s never been given any backstory and he only communicates in baby talk. Except for wearing a cape, he looks identical to all the other robots and, quite frankly, he’s beginning to seem under-designed – especially when one of this game’s main gimmicks is dressing him up as other PlayStation characters. I am annoyed I can come up with animal abilities for better navigation/quest access in BIomutant, oh no we have gliders (other features, a merchant like BOTW I’ll never find again) and vehicles but why can’t I dig, fly, swim?
